When I was a kid, sometimes I got hungry enough to go into the kitchen and whip up with some really weird concoctions. My mom would get after me about it and laugh. Doesn’t everyone make peanut butter and jelly pancakes or chocolate banana slop? As long as it tasted good, I didn’t care. I’ve always been a bit…adventurous.
Recently, I was looking at all these berries in season at super-cheap prices, and suddenly got the urge to make something sweet and spicy. Like a fruit salsa. Most of the ones I looked up online sounded kind of gross. I don’t think strawberries and onions go well together. Let’s just say that might be experience talking!
So I came up with this:
- 1 cup strawberries
- 1 cup blueberries
- 1 cup pineapple
- ½ cup fresh chopped mint
- 1 fresh jalapeno, chopped
- juice of 1 lime
- a handful of fresh cilantro
- Mix. Enjoy.
So I proceeded to dig in. That’s when I discovered I’d blown my mouth off with way too much of the spiciest jalapeno I’ve ever eaten.
Can’t even feed that to the chickens, I thought. They might lay flaming eggs and would definitely never forgive me. But I bet it would heat up the compost pile pretty well…
I thought about pouring it on the garden as a bunny deterrent, then thought the better of it and sent it to the compost pile. God help the critter that tries to eat that!
So my next attempt will have a lot LESS jalapeno in it. I plan on using it with a breakfast quesadilla filled with cream cheese this weekend. Could be weird, could be great. It’s worth a try. Hopefully my mouth will survive the experience! I’ll let you know!
